Who we are seeking:

Health Justice Commons is seeking an Associate Director who is a collaborative leader with a strong commitment to movement building and disability justice. Health Justice Commons is a small and growing organization, and our work is under increasing demand. This is a new position which will significantly expand the organization’s capacity and offer a dynamic candidate the opportunity for growth within the organization. It also offers the opportunity to shape crucial aspects of HJC's work and impact, now and in the future. 

The Associate Director will support the Founding Director in managing the organization’s growth and ensuring its sustainability and strategic impact. The Associate Director will also ensure the smooth and effective administration of operations including finance and people power (human resources), organizational processes and technology, and organizational programs and movement building work. The Associate Director reports to the Founding Director. The role of Associate Director requires experience in fundraising, operations, management, organizational development and cross-sector movement building. If you are deeply dedicated to intersectional social justice and have a passion for organizational administration and capacity building, this is the role for you!

This position is currently funded for .75 FTE with the goal to be full time in 2025.


Role and Tasks

Operations and Finance 

40% of the position

  • Manage the day-to-day operations and administrative functions of the organization; the primary tasks for this day-to-day work are delineated below
  • Supervise 1-2 part-time staff members and/or consultants as needed
  • Under the direction of the Founding Director, manage the budget development process 
  • Monitor monthly financials generated by HJC’s fiscal sponsor, cash flow, and budget to actuals, reporting to the Founding Director
  • Identify the need for new policies, systems, and processes to enhance organizational efficiency, mission aligned impact, and sustainability, and manage their development and implementation
  • Manage contracts with independent contractors and consultants (about 5-10 maximum per year)
  • Ensure consistent implementation of HJC's filing and data management systems by the Administrative and Development Coordinator, identifying, devising, and implementing updates and improvements as needed.


Fundraising and Development

40% of the position

  • Under the direction of the Founding Director, develop strategic annual fundraising plans to support HJC’s financial sustainability and growth
  • Manage the successful implementation of annual fundraising plans, including developing clear timelines, tasks and roles, ensuring goals are met and coordinating involvement from the HJC team as needed
  • Sustain and manage relationships with current donors and funders
  • Expand HJC’s funding prospects through consistent funder and foundation research, grant writing, and reporting in collaboration with the Founding Director, delegating tasks to the Administrative and Development Coordinator as needed
  • Maintain complete and accurate fundraising records
  • Track and/or compile organizational metrics and outcomes to demonstrate the compelling impact of HJC’s work for grants, storytelling and reporting as needed


Program Management

20% of the position

  • Manage the logistics and implementation of the organization’s core programming including HJC’s: Fall and Spring political education series (2 times per year), bi-montly Radical Healers and Healthcare Workers Solidarity Gatherings, and bi-monthly Movement Moment Strategy Meetings (bi-monthly indicates, every other month)
  • Attend Radical Telehealth Collective (RTC) meetings and provide logistical, strategic, and leadership development support, as needed
  • Monitor program outcomes and impact, identifying opportunities for increased impact and innovation
  • Manage the logistics and implementation of future programming 
  • Skillfully and accurately represent the Health Justice Commons in meetings with partners and collaborators, as needed
  • Participate as a thought partner for current and future HJC programming in collaboration with the Founding Director, other members of the HJC team, and with HJC movement-building partners


Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in leadership, project management, operations, and/or administration, with a demonstrated commitment to cross - sector social justice, particularly within the fields of Disability, Health, Climate, and/or Healing Justice
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in providing consistent, compassionate, and insightful accountability and support to staff as a supervisor with a justice-centered approach that acknowledges and actively works to dismantle power and privilege and aims to build the leadership capacity and skills of HJC team members
  • Proven track record of moving funders and donors to provide significant financial support, with the ability to skillfully represent HJC’s work in writing and in person, and steward relationships with funders and donors
  • Experience with operations, organizational development, and capacity-building work with a passion for improving and developing systems and processes and scaling up organizations
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and problem solve independently 
  • Able to work with remote team members in several time zones and to work flexible hours to respond to position needs
  • Experience engaging in movement-building, community organizing, social justice-oriented service, healing/ healthcare, or cultural work that demonstrates and aligns with HJC’s vision, values, and mission
  • Fluency with diverse apps and platforms for project management, finance, and operations, such as Trello, Slack, 1password, Thinkific, CRMs, Quickbooks, and/or similar software
  • Proficiency with Mac systems, Word, Excel, Google Workspace 

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Bilingual or Multilingual, including ASL 
  • Dynamic and confident facilitator of both small team meetings and large workshops, with expertise engaging a wide range of participants and movement spaces including disabled communities and healthcare workers and healers
  • Experience using FileMaker Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva Pro and other design applications 
  • Experience with social media platforms
