Freedom Service Dogs
Freedom Service Dogs (FSD) is a nonprofit organization located in Englewood, Colorado that serves as both a human services and animal welfare organization. FSD rescues dogs from shelters and custom trains them to be certified service dogs for people challenged with disabilities. Certified service dogs retrieve and carry objects, turn lights on and off, open and close doors, find a person, find the phone, push a LifeLine or 911 button, assist with pulling a wheelchair, help with transfers, brace and counterbalance ambulatory clients, and perform other specialized tasks needed by the client while also serving as a social bridge. Integrating dogs into the treatment of conditions such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, autism, and PTSD has been shown to be physiologically and emotionally beneficial to people – empowering them with a newfound sense of independence for basic tasks like using the restroom, getting in and out of bed, and through a variety of public interactions.
