    First Book is a national non-profit organization that provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy--access to books.

    The First Book Portland, OR Advisory Board was formed in 1998 to serve children from low-income families in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. Our Board is comprised of volunteer leaders representing non-profit agencies, businesses, and the community.

    Description

    The goal of First Book-Portland is to raise funds to provide book grants to existing community programs serving children from low-income families, such as Head Start. Advisory Board grants ideally provide at least six books for each child enrolled in the program to take home and keep. Our book grants are available to programs serving children from age’s birth to 18 years.

    Since our inception, wehave granted well over of 47,000 brand new books to programs in the Tri-County area through our yearly grant cycles. Get connected and find the best fit for helping to get new books into the hands of our children. Please feel free to contact us to learn more or to join in our efforts of providing new books to the children in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. In the First Book program, one book costs $2.50. A donation of $15 provides a child with a new book every month for 6 months. A donation of $30 provides a child with a new book every month for a year.
