INSPIRE - Vietnamese Immersion Program Assistant

Position: Vietnamese Immersion Program Assistant 

Program Area: In-School Program for Refugee and Immigrant Education (INSPIRE) 

Locations: In-person at Rose City Park Elementary (2334 NE 57th Ave, Portland, OR 97213) 

Schedule: Weekly on Monday and Wednesday from 2:15-4:30pm 

Time Commitment: Three terms from 2023-2024: Fall term 2023, Winter term 2024, Spring Term 2024  

Program Description:  

The INSPIRE Program serves Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander, African, and Slavic 1st - 8th grade students and their families in Portland metro area schools. Our goal is simple yet profound: to make a positive difference in our community. We offer a range of services, including academic case management, after-school tutoring and enrichment programs, and family engagement activities. 

Position Summary:  

As a Vietnamese Immersion Program Assistant for our After-School Program, your primary responsibility is to support the planning and implementation of engaging activities for two distinct groups of elementary school students within our program. On Mondays, volunteers work with 4th-5th graders, and on Wednesdays, volunteers focus is on 1st-3rd graders. Your role directly impacts our students by providing: 

• Personalized support through small group or one-on-one tutoring. 
• Strengthened academic skills in math and literacy. 
• Unique experiences and life skills through sports, enrichment clubs, and exciting field trips. 

Qualifications:  

• Language: Bilingual in English and Vietnamese (required) 
• Cultural Sensitivity: Awareness and appreciation of Vietnamese culture and language. 
• Patience: Ability to engage and support diverse elementary school students in their learning journey. 
• Creativity: Capacity to develop engaging activities that align with our language immersion program's objectives. 
• Communication: Strong communication skills to interact effectively with students, program staff, and volunteers. 
• Flexibility: Willingness and ability to adapt and modify activities based on the evolving class dynamic. 
• Organizational Skills: Basic organizational skills to assist in planning and executing activities seamlessly. 

Requirements:  

• Fluent in English & Vietnamese languages 
• Must be 18 or older   
• Must pass background check 
• Must have proof of COVID Vaccination
