Room to Read Wants To Hire You (Plus Other Great Jobs In Honor Of Dr Seuss’ Birthday!)

An painting of the word, 'Dr. Seuss'.

March 2nd is Read Across America Day! It’s also Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and I think he’d approve of the coincidence as he once stated, “You’ve got brains in your head. You’ve got feet in your shoes.” So let’s take advantage of both to get out there and spread the joy of reading!

“A person’s a person, no matter how small,” so get started with our youngest readers. Schools in Harlem, Boston, Denver, and DC are looking for early education teachers.

And there are lots of ways to spread literacy without standing in front of a classroom. Based in Oakland, CA, Reading Partners gives underserved students across America one-on-one reading support to develop literacy skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading. They’re hiring in Dallas, New York, DC, and around California. Meanwhile, the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford is looking for a Literacy Coordinator to help them place reading mentors in area schools. And in Knoxville, TN, you can volunteer to help record an audiobook for people with disabilities. They’ll even provide the training.

Dr. Seuss may have called adults “obsolete children,” but it’s never too late to learn to read. One in six adults in Tarrant County, TX can’t read. Volunteer with the Tarrant County Literacy Coalition to help change that. New York’s Queens Library is on the search for a director of their adult education program, and Concerned Black Men National also needs someone to run their adult literacy programs.

Work on spreading literacy around the world with Room to ReadThey work with NGOs in developing countries worldwide to implement programs that promote literacy and gender equality in education. They’re hiring for all kinds of positions in San Francisco. And if you’ve got the travel bug yourself, work on education in Peru or set up libraries in Bolivia. “Oh the places you’ll go!”

“The more that you read, the more things you’ll know.” So don’t forget to keep up with your own reading! Join a book club. And check out some bibliophile Idealist members to ask for book recommendations.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,” these great opportunities won’t get filled, so take a look at all the ways to get involved today!
