Open Thread | What’s the Best Career Advice You’ve Ever Received?

A graphic design of a question mark.

Welcome to our third open thread, where we turn the conversation over to our community.

Two weeks ago, we asked you to share advice for people looking to break into the nonprofit sector. Today, we’re shifting gears a bit and asking you to share the best career advice you’ve ever received.

Advice can come from a variety of people and places, often hits us when we least expect it, and, oddly enough, can be challenging to follow.

For example, during a meeting at my last job, my manager mentioned that what we say “no” to is just as important as what we say “yes” to while we were deciding what projects to prioritize. Personally, it’s easy to say “yes” to requests and projects, but for every item I take on, something else will not get done. Sounds simple, right? I still find myself hesitating to say, “no” but when I do I work better.

How about you? What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
