    We are seeking a Safety Intern who is passionate about creating safe, inclusive environments and wants to gain real-world experience in health, safety, and risk management within a nonprofit setting.

    Summary

    AbilityFirst’s Internship program is a unique opportunity for current participants at our sights to gain real-world experience within the Safety Department.

    The Safety Intern will work alongside the Operations and Facilities teams to support a variety of safety initiatives and help ensure our programs and locations meet compliance standards. This is an excellent opportunity for students studying Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Risk Management, or a related field to gain real-world experience.

    Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, hard-working, and creative. They will demonstrate a professional demeanor, work well with others, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

    Interns are expected to be able to commute to the various AbilityFirst Locations.

    WHAT YOU’LL DO:

    • Provide valuable support in the daily operations of the organization’s safety program.
    • Assist in maintaining accurate safety records, organizing incident reports, tracking training certifications, and supporting the implementation of safety policies and procedures.
    • Help manage safety documentation and respond to employee safety-related inquiries.
    • Conduct quality checks on safety reports and assist in distributing compliance documents for electronic signatures (e.g., Adobe).
    • Participate in planning and supporting safety awareness events, trainings, and wellness initiatives.
    • Assist in creating safety-related surveys and collecting feedback on workplace safety perceptions.
    • Support research projects focused on safety trends, incident analytics, and best practices in workplace health and safety.
    • Demonstrate a professional work ethic and attention to detail.
    • Maintain flexibility with work scheduling as needed to support field visits or audits.
    • Display strong written and verbal communication skills when collaborating with team members and other departments.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the mission of the program and organization.

    BACKGROUND YOU’LL NEED:

    • Must have a Valid Driver’s License or State ID is required.
    • Must be at least 18-24 years of age is required.
    • An interest in Human Resources and/or Safety is preferred.
    • Must be currently attending a university or college while pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree to be considered for the position.
    • Familiar with AbilityFirst and the services received at any of our sites.
    • Willingness to work with folks of diverse experiences and backgrounds

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Changes in the environment, such as the office or outdoors.
    • Physical effort/lifting, such as sedentary- up to 15-20 pounds at times.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    Mandated Reporting Requirements: The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

    COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements: Effective August 9, 2021, the State Health Officer has mandated that all workers, paid or unpaid, in homeless services organizations must provide proof of vaccination. If eligible for a booster shot, proof of booster is also required. If not fully vaccinated, weekly COVID-19 testing is necessary depending on the program.
