TITLE: Liberation Summer Camp Intern

JOB CATEGORY: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

STATUS: Part-Time, 21 hours per week for a total of 210 hours

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

Amid today’s resurgence of grassroots organizing and heightened calls for racial justice, pointed efforts must be made to engage young people in local communities. The New York Office of the American Friends Service Committee will contribute to this effort during our 2025 in-person Liberation Summer Youth Advocacy Training Camp. Our focus will be empowering young people with the skills and strategies, including using the arts, to advocate for healing in our criminal and immigration legal systems. We are seeking an intern to join us in this work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Assist in the development of the Camp’s curriculum and lesson plans.
2. Assist with Camp logistics.
3. Participate in Camp sessions, including the possibility of some limited travel.
4. Guide the Camp’s use of social media.
5. Participate in ongoing evaluations of the camp and an end of camp debrief.
6. Present on their internship experience.
7. Participate in an exit interview at the end of the internship.
8. Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
9. Operates safely in all conditions and follows policies and procedures.
10. Other duties and projects as assigned.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum Education Required: College degree preferred. High school diploma or GED required.
2. Minimum Experience Required: Areas of criminal and/or immigration systems or working with youth ages 14 – 20 preferred.
3. Experience with various social media platforms.
4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
5. Ability to work at least 21 hours per week.
6. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends and to travel, as required.
7. Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
8. Experience with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.
9. Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
10. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
11. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
12. Respect for and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, racial, gender and religious diversity and familiarity with non-violent approaches to problem solving.
13. Ability to organize, plan ahead and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

COMPENSATION

This position is a non-exempt position, Salary Family: Intern. Job Code: Intern. Starting hourly rate is $20 per hour. There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
