(possible full-time with Marine Biology elective)

The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a temporary three-quarter-time Biology teacher beginning August 11, 2025, and serving through January 7, 2026. This is a sabbatical replacement. This part-time position entails teaching 3 sections of 11th-grade Biology with a cellular and molecular biology focus. If qualified, the candidate will also be invited to teach our Marine Biology elective.

A qualified candidate will:

• Have a Bachelor's (or advanced) degree in Biology
• Be well prepared to teach a rigorous Biology survey course
• Have experience teaching Science to students at the secondary or college level
• Be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment
• Have demonstrated cultural competence
• Have strong organizational and communication skills
• Have patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor

Teachers at College Prep work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum. The College Prep science program is innovative and rigorous, and includes three required year-long courses: Physics (in the 9th grade), Chemistry (in the 10th grade), and Biology (in the 11th grade). Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more science electives. These include Advanced Topics in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and semester electives such as Astronomy, Molecular Genetics, Issues in Science, and Forensics. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes. Science teachers work closely with one another as teams for particular courses and across the curriculum.

Candidates should be eager to spend additional time getting to know and helping students outside of the classroom. College Prep teachers also take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, mostly during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day. Faculty at College Prep are compensated according to a step scale based on years of experience that ranges from $74,000/year for teachers with no prior relevant experience to $148,500/year for teachers with 44 years of prior experience. Temporary or Part-time teachers are compensated on the same scale, prorated for their percentage or term of employment, but are not eligible for benefits (health coverage, dental coverage, retirement plan, etc).
