    Description

    About Us

Lost in New Haven is a new, community-centered history museum dedicated to making the past come alive through storytelling, artifacts, and engaging programs. As a startup non-profit organization, we’re building a welcoming and dynamic team from the ground up—people who are creative, collaborative, and energized by the opportunity to shape something new.

    Position Summary

The Volunteer Coordinator will develop and manage a diverse, enthusiastic team of volunteers who help bring the museum’s mission to life. From front desk greeters to school tour docents and behind-the-scenes helpers, you’ll be the heart of our volunteer network. This role is both strategic and hands-on: you’ll design the volunteer program while also leading daily coordination.

    Key Responsibilities

    Program Development & Management

    • Design and implement a structured volunteer program that includes recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and recognition.
    • Develop volunteer job descriptions and training materials in partnership with museum staff.
    • Establish systems to track hours, contributions, and engagement.

    Recruitment & Engagement

    • Actively recruit volunteers through schools, community groups, online platforms, and events.
    • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive culture among volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
    • Organize regular trainings, check-ins, appreciation events, and learning opportunities.

    Operations & Communications

    • Coordinate daily volunteer assignments and scheduling to ensure coverage across museum operations and special events.
    • Maintain clear communication with volunteers and staff; resolve scheduling or interpersonal issues as needed.
    • Track and evaluate program impact and volunteer satisfaction; report on key metrics.

    Support for Programs & Events

    • Work closely with education, events, and visitor services teams to ensure volunteers are prepared and supported.
    • Help orient volunteers for large programs, school visits, and community events.

    Ideal Candidate Will Have:

    • A passion for history and community building
    • Experience managing or coordinating volunteers (paid or unpaid)
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Organizational and problem-solving abilities
    • Comfort with technology (e.g., spreadsheets, scheduling software, email newsletters)
    • Enthusiasm for working in a startup environment where adaptability is key

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in museums, nonprofits, or education settings
    • Familiarity with volunteer management software
    • Bilingual or multilingual skills a plus
