    Description

    Dynamic and enthusiastic Assistant instructors/ Basketball Coaches needed to assist in a 5-week Summer Learning Academy in Boston from July 7th - August 8th. The summer academies will be held at UMass Boston in Dorchester and the Fessenden School in West Newton. This position will support our summer academy at The Fessenden School in West Newton.

    3PointFoundation provides a unique summer program that features project-based learning in the classroom with afternoon sports and other activities for under-served, economically disadvantaged Boston middle-school youth. Our goal is to provide summer learning gains and promote social-emotional growth. We have been recognized by the Boston Public Schools as a BPS Priority Partner and an official Summer Learning Academy.

    Responsibilities:

    Summer Learning Academy Assistant Instructors/Basketball Coaches assist teachers in providing an innovative, high-quality education program designed to meet the needs of the student population in the program. Paraprofessionals work with program staff to create an educational environment in which quality and continuity are key factors in educating students. Due to the short duration of summer programs and the critical need to boost student learning during this time, it is particularly important that paraprofessionals in BPS summer programs:

    • Assist with the preparation of cognitively demanding lessons, assignments and enrichment activities & lead sports curriculum portion
    • Support direct instruction to students individually, in small groups, and the classroom settings
    • Establish a productive learning environment and classroom culture in which all students are respected
    • Understand and implement culturally and linguistically sustaining practices
    • Assist with classroom management; enforce discipline code
    • Perform other related duties as required

    Terms:

    • $20-$25 per hour paid weekly, depending on qualifications
    • Schedule: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
    • Time is spent at The Fessenden School in West Newton. The Assistant Instructor/Basketball Coach will meet students at Roxbury Crossing to be bussed to West Newton and back each day.

    Qualifications - Required:

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Experience working with a diverse population of students, including English Language Learners.

    Competencies - Preferred:

    • Ability and desire to positively impact elementary and middle school age students.
    • Possession of a growth mindset; a willingness to learn new technologies and teaching techniques; and a positive “I care” attitude, including the ability to maintain enthusiasm in the face of challenges.
    • Engaging communication skills, including the ability to hold students’ attention while discussing subject matter, and willingness to engage parents/guardians as partners in the camp experience
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be a team player.

    Qualifications - Preferred:

    • At least 48 credit hours of advanced coursework, or a college degree (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or other graduate work)
    • A current staff member or paraprofessional at any BPS school.
    • Experience working in a BPS summer learning program.
    • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity.
