    Description

Executive Director Job Description - Foggy Bottom West End Village

The Foggy Bottom West End Village (FBWEV or Village) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit neighborhood, volunteer-driven membership organization based on the concept of neighbors helping neighbors. FBWEV provides program activities to connect people through its ongoing events, affinity groups, and social events, and offers basic services to help members live independently in their homes for the long term. The neighborhood is composed of numerous high-rise and low-rise apartments and historic row houses. A Board of Directors (Board) oversees the finances and operations of the Village. The Village was started in 2013 and currently has more than 150 members.

    ROLE OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

FBWEV is seeking a community-minded and service-oriented leader with several years of growth-oriented, non-profit leadership, networking, and fundraising experience to be its full-time Executive Director (ED). Reporting to the Village’s Board President, the individual will work in close collaboration with the Village Board, while directing and collaborating with staff and more than 60 dedicated volunteers. The preferred candidate has non-profit board leadership experience and is committed to building a successful Village reflecting the vision and efforts of all staff, volunteers and members seeking to remain active and age in their homes.

The ED is also responsible for leading the organization’s strategic planning, and fostering its creativity and growth as well as long-term sustainability. The ED will serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson and ambassador; therefore, a genuine commitment to and passion for FBWEV’s mission of serving and meeting needs of others is essential. The top candidate will bring a strong record of team-building experience as a senior leader of a community or member-based nonprofit organization, in addition to experience designing and implementing high-impact programs and services. The ideal candidate also will bring a creative mindset, a proven ability to build relationships with diverse audiences, and an understanding of best practices in community-based and/or other nonprofit organizations.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Strategic Vision and Planning: Collaborate with the Board, volunteers, staff members, and other stakeholders to develop a strategic vision for the Village’s future, focused on membership growth and financial sustainability. Collect information for strategic planning purposes by listening to and learning from these sectors and facilitating an inclusive process that allows all ideas to be heard and evaluated. Work with the Board to develop a clear and detailed strategic plan to advance the vision with key responsibilities, outcomes, timelines, measurements and metrics.
    • Program Design, Management and Measurement: Implement the strategic plan and ensure that all programs and services are aligned with it and FBWEV’s mission to manage the organization consistent with the Village’s key missions: providing support for people as they age, and maintaining social and cultural activities. Members frequently join for access to programs and socializing. To regularly meet or exceed target outcomes, the Village needs to regularly collect and monitor data on member experiences and satisfaction to ensure our programs are meeting the needs of our community.
    • Organization Management and Oversight: Manage the day-to-day operations of the Village, its office premises, and the work of staff, volunteers, interns and other associated individuals. Manage and control its expenditures in accordance with the Village’s fiscal management policies and consult with the Village’s Treasurer to effectively manage and grow financial reserves needed to meet the ongoing strategic needs of the Village; and ensure compliance with the Village’s policies and procedures. Recruit, develop and retain viable and active Volunteer, Program, and Membership, Committee members. The executive Director’s role is to oversee the work of the committees.
    • Revenue Generation through Fundraising: Work with the Board’s Development Committee to assist with raising donations and other funds to sustain the Village. This includes working collaboratively with other DC villages to benefit from and participate in the pursuit of philanthropic and government grants, support from individuals and foundations, corporate partnerships, and new sources of revenue.
    • Maintain an effective relationship with the DC Villages Collaborative (DCVC) and other organizations that support older adults, and with the DC Department of Aging and Community Living: This involves understanding of current trends and successes: committing FBWEV staff to support initiatives in the evaluation and adoption of best practices.
    • Communications and Outreach: Oversee and coordinate production and distribution of all Village communications and publicity including press releases and weekly member newsletters, and maintain the Village’s website and presence on social media with accurate and current information. Act as the Village’s primary spokesperson responding to media inquiries and actively seeking opportunities to increase awareness of the Village’s brand, programs and services; and cultivate relationships with existing partners, including community organizations, donors, sponsors, government agencies and vendors to promote the Village and foster strong collaboration.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • The preferred candidate is a high-energy team-oriented leader with a steady temperament, excellent people and communication skills (both written and oral) who is committed to meeting the needs of all Village members.
    • They have demonstrated achievements as a creative problem-solver leading a non-profit organization with proven success managing staff, programs, finances, and Board and/or senior management relationships.
    • They show high integrity.
    • They have a genuine and demonstrated passion for and commitment to serving others.
    • They embrace a collaborative and inclusive approach to decision-making, a “listen-to-learn” leadership style and are an effective delegator.
    • They’ve proven the ability to develop and implement a strategic plan that incorporates diverse perspectives of various stakeholders.
    • The new ED will have experience managing volunteers and an appreciation for their essential role in a community-based organization.
    • A background and/or experience in social work, public health, or gerontology is a plus.

The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000. Benefits to be negotiated.
