    Description

    Tenant Organizer

West Bronx Housing and Neighborhood Resource Center, Inc. (West Bronx Housing) has worked since 1978 to preserve and protect the affordable housing stock of the Northwest Bronx. West Bronx Housing takes a problem solving approach that incorporates both landlords and tenants and empowers its clients along the way, up to and including building organizing when necessary.

West Bronx Housing is currently looking to add a Tenant Organizer to its team. Guided by the Executive Director and the Housing Specialists, the Tenant Organizer will be the first point of contact for outreach to distressed buildings in the Bronx. The Tenant Organizer will be responsible for researching distressed buildings, distribution of materials in multiple languages, door knocking, and scheduling tenant association meetings. In conjunction with the Executive Director and other staff, the Tenant Organizer will also co-lead, and eventually lead these meetings. When needed, the Tenant Organizer will also provide basic one-on-one housing related casework, such as basic assistance with arrears, benefits renewals, and housing court guidance.

The Tenant Organizer will have the opportunity to create change on a grass roots level. This opportunity includes meeting with and engaging with elected officials at all levels of government, and learning to exercise the levers of city and state government to produce results for tenants.

    Program Goals:

    1. Researching buildings to organize.
    2. Distributing materials in multiple languages.
    3. Door knocking and canvassing buildings.
    4. Assist buildings with forming and maintaining tenant associations.
    5. Conducting Know Your Rights seminars to tenant associations.
    6. Basic housing related casework.

    Position Requirements:

West Bronx Housing clients are majority monolingual Spanish speakers, so Spanish speaking ability is a must. Candidate must be a self-starter with experience in community organizing, public benefits, and/or rent stabilization and housing law. Candidate must be computer literate with knowledge of Access, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and have the ability to quickly learn city agency online platforms. The Tenant Organizer position allows for some remote work, but does require fieldwork and office work. The candidate must have a flexible schedule that allows for evening meetings, as well as the occasional weekend event.

    Salary: $50,000 - $55,000 plus generous benefits.

EOE Statement: We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
