    About the Alliance Française of Washington, DC (AFDC):

    The AFDC is a non-governmental, non-profit, organization with a 501 (c ) 3 status. As such it does not receive any funds from the French government or any other government. It is one of the 832 AF chapters in the world and one of the 109 chapters established in the USA. Its mission is to promote the French language and culture as well as Francophone cultures to a largely American and international public who wants to learn French and/or wants to learn more about the culture. The AFDC serves as the French language and cultural center in the Nation’s Capital.

    Principal responsibilities:

    • Open door for people (student, members, faculty, library patrons, visitors) from the AI-phone in the main office
    • Help orient students/members/visitors if they come up to the main office
    • Assist with registrations, membership purchases, and book purchases both in-person and over-the-phone
    • Bring boxes of textbooks up to the main office and shelf themin dedicated closet on the appropriate shelves
    • Help distribute books for students
    • Take stock of the book inventory
    • Make flyers in French and English for the e-newsletters using Canva for both Adult and Youth Education Programs and Certifications
    • Schedule the Education Newsletter as indicated by the Academic Director
    • Take down phone messages and ensure their delivery to appropriate staff members
    • Occasional proctoring during certifications days
    • Verify bathroom supplies during each shift before each evening class starts

    Required qualifications:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication in French and English: the candidate should be able to answer the phone and take messages in both French and English as well as write emails in French and English without mistakes.
    • Fluency in French language should be at least at Intermediate-Advanced (B2) level
    • Up-to-date Covid vaccination.
    • Customer service oriented is a must.
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a plus.
    • Experience with Canva making flyers and visuals is a must.
    • Experience with SmartBoard technologies is a plus as well as with touch screen TVs to troubleshoot any issues that the faculty may have at beginning of classes.
    • Must be able to carry boxes weighing 25 lbs. upstairs.
    • Common sense appreciated.
    • Please note that the AF de Washington, DC does not have an elevator as it is a grandfathered historic building
    • HOURS: Mondays thru Thursdays, 3:00 to 6:30pm and Fridays, 9:00am to 4:30pm

    5-day paid vacations / year to be scheduled upon approval of the immediate supervisor and the Executive Director.

    Membership to AFDC: free attendance to most events unless otherwise indicated; access to the library.

    Level of Language Proficiency

    French fluency at Intermediate-Advanced level (B2) both verbally and in writing (no grammatical or spelling mistakes) is a must.
