    Organization: Food Empowerment Project (foodispower.org)

    Location: Remote, U.S.-based (California preferred)

    Job Type: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt

    Reports To: Core Collective (horizontal leadership structure)

    Hours: Monday–Thursday (four days a week, 9 hours a day); some evening and weekend hours, as needed.

    Salary: $70,000 USD annually

    Benefits: Health care reimbursement for medical, dental, and vision premiums; 3 weeks paid vacation annually (with accrual increases over time); professional development budget

    Background

    Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P., foodispower.org), founded in 2007, seeks to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one’s food choices. We seek specifically to empower those with the fewest resources. Our advocacy areas include spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, fighting against unfair conditions for produce workers, calling for the availability of healthy foods in Black and Brown communities and low-income areas, and the conservation of natural resources. We encourage healthy food choices that reflect a more compassionate society. Food Empowerment Project is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is presently seeking to maintain a robust program aimed at helping individuals go vegan and stay vegan.

    Job Summary

    The Operations & HR Team Member is a pivotal role responsible for maintaining and enhancing F.E.P.’s operational infrastructure. This position combines strategic planning, compliance oversight, and hands-on administration across HR, finance, risk management, and program support.

    Essential Functions & Responsibilities

    Compliance & Registrations (10–15%)

    • Manage non-profit registrations, renewals, and filings (state/federal)
    • Oversee employment registration and workers’ compensation compliance
    • Ensure IRS compliance, 1099 issuance, and sales tax filings as needed

    Payroll & Benefits Administration (15–20%)

    • Process payroll and troubleshoot with platforms like ADP
    • Administer benefits (e.g., 401(k)), track contributions
    • Reconcile payroll reports with financial records

    Insurance & Risk Management (5–10%)

    • Manage insurance renewals and liaise with brokers
    • Oversee workers’ compensation coverage and claims
    • Partner with legal for HR issues and policy interpretation

    Financial Operations (20–25%)

    • Review bank statements, credit card reconciliations
    • Support audits and accounting processes
    • Approve payments via Bill.com or equivalent
    • Assist with budget development and tracking

    HR & Team Support (15–20%)

    • Oversee onboarding, orientations, and performance check-ins
    • Coordinate compliance training, PIPs, and interventions
    • Support team culture and acknowledgements
    • Set up and manage team email accounts
    • Assist with conflict resolution and workplace investigations

    Documentation & SOPs (10–15%)

    • Create and maintain SOPs, handbooks, and guides
    • Manage key spreadsheets, trackers, and collective documentation

    Administrative & Miscellaneous (10–15%)

    • Coordinate office supply needs and team mailings
    • Respond to operational inquiries from staff and partners

    Qualifications & Competencies

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business Admin, Non-profit Mgmt, or equivalent experience
    • 3+ years in operations, admin, or nonprofit-related role

    Technical Skills

    • Proficiency with ADP, Bill.com, QuickBooks, etc.
    • Strong Microsoft Office and Google Workspace skills

    Core Competencies

    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
    • Knowledge of nonprofit compliance and risk management
    • Commitment to F.E.P.’s mission, ethics, and social justice values

    Working Conditions

    • Majority remote work with occasional in-person needs
    • Typical office environment with light physical activity
    • Occasional early-morning, evening, or weekend availability required
