    Description

    The Senior Staff Attorney, Pro Bono Litigation Corps will play a key role in developing and supporting litigation that challenges unlawful government actions, in partnership with other organizations and pro bono attorneys nationwide. The ideal candidate is a seasoned litigator with a passion for public interest law, strong project management skills, and an interest in mentoring and collaborating with pro bono counsel in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. This position reports to the Supervising Attorney, Pro Bono Litigation Corps.

    Specific Job Responsibilities include:

    Litigation and Legal Advocacy

    • Help develop and execute legal strategies for cases in collaboration with the Supervising Attorney, pro bono counsel, and partner organizations.
    • Draft and review pleadings, motions, briefs, and other litigation documents.
    • Conduct legal research and provide analysis on novel or complex public interest issues.
    • Support case management and coordinate litigation tasks, including trial and appellate matters.

    Pro Bono Coordination and Supervision

    • Assist in identifying and onboarding pro bono legal teams and providing technical guidance throughout the litigation process.
    • Mentor pro bono attorneys and legal volunteers, ensuring adherence to professional standards and alignment with L4GG’s mission.
    • Contribute to the development of training materials and resources to support pro bono partnerships.

    Program Development and Collaboration

    • Collaborate with internal teams to identify new litigation opportunities that respond to community needs and organizational priorities.
    • Engage with nonprofit and community partners to strengthen legal strategies rooted in grassroots advocacy.
    • Assist in collaboration with the communications team to publicize litigation efforts, client stories, and impact.

    Compliance, Evaluation, and Reporting

    • Ensure compliance with L4GG’s legal and ethical protocols, including client confidentiality and conflict checks.
    • Track case progress, outcomes, and milestones for internal monitoring and external reporting.
    • Support program evaluation and contribute to reports for funders and stakeholders.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
    • Minimum 6–8 years of litigation experience, ideally with exposure to advocating for or opposing positions taken by federal or state governments, or navigating federal regulatory procedures on behalf of clients.
    • Knowledge of legal principles relevant to litigation or regulatory advocacy involving federal or state governments. Familiarity with the Administrative Procedure Act is preferred.
    • Experience initiating affirmative litigation in state or federal court, including identifying legal theories, cultivating client relationships, and assembling supporting factual records.
    • Strong candidates will bring experience in one or more of the following areas:
      • Litigating in state or federal court, including claim investigation, legal research, drafting pleadings and briefs, and engaging in hearings or oral arguments
      • Navigating the federal regulatory process through litigation, rulemaking, or administrative advocacy
      • Building client relationships and cultivating coalition partnerships
    • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple legal projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a remote, tech-forward team environment.
    • Passion for L4GG’s mission and a commitment to justice and equity.
    • Proficiency with G-Suite, including Google Docs, Sheets, and Share Drives.

    Desired qualifications:

    • Experience in one or more of the following areas: constitutional law, civil rights, immigration, environmental justice, election law, or administrative law.
    • Experience partnering with pro bono counsel and nonprofit legal organizations.
    • Familiarity with litigation as a tool for systemic or policy change.
    • Experience with tools such as Asana, Slack, and Airtable.
