    Position Title: Community Organizer

    Location: In Person based in Brooklyn.

    Reports To: Deputy of Organizing Director

    Employment Type: Full-time

    Salary Range:$45,000 – $50,000

    Start Date: The intended start date for the position is September 2025.

    Churches United for Fair Housing (CUFFH) is a grassroots advocacy organization rooted in faith and community spaces that provides affordable housing services and integrated social resources. CUFFH organizes our working-class BIPOC communities around issues of housing, immigration, social, and economic justice to generate power and harness true liberation.

    Overview:

    The Community Organizer builds tenant power to fight displacement, improve housing conditions, and win long-term solutions to the housing crisis. This role centers on organizing tenants across rent-stabilized, subsidized, and other targeted buildings, developing grassroots leadership, launching tenant associations, and advancing tenant-led campaigns. The ideal candidate is a committed organizer with a strong passion for housing justice and community empowerment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Community Organizer and Leadership Development (55%)

    • Identify and build relationships with tenants in targeted neighborhoods and buildings.
    • Support tenants in forming, sustaining, and expanding tenant associations.
    • Facilitate political education sessions, organizing workshops, and leadership development programming.
    • Organize and support regular tenant meetings to develop shared demands, build strategy, and take collective action.
    • Promote democratic governance and long-term sustainability in tenant-led groups.
    • Lead weekly canvassing operations—including door-knocking and outreach in buildings.
    • Train tenant leaders and volunteers to participate in canvassing, including how to engage residents, track issues, and support associations.
    • Coordinate and lead special weekend community canvasses, especially around campaign milestones, legislative pushes, or building-specific crises.

    Campaign Development and Advocacy (30%)

    • Co-develop tenant-led campaigns focused on repairs, rent justice, anti-harassment, or displacement protections.
    • Coordinate strategic actions such as rallies, press conferences, and visits to legislators.
    • Provide coaching for tenants to speak to the media, testify at hearings, and advocate directly with public officials.
    • Participate in housing justice coalitions and collaborate with allied organizations.
    • Support documentation, storytelling, and campaign materials grounded in tenant experience.

    Tenant-Led Housing Justice Projects (15%)

    • Coordinate a minimum of three tenant-driven housing justice projects each year, such as:
      • Launching new tenant associations.
      • Mobilizing campaigns for repairs or code enforcement.
      • Coordinating tenant delegations to meet directly with elected officials and agencies.
    • Build partnerships with legal service providers, housing advocates, and other grassroots groups.
    • Mobilize tenants to co-lead project planning, implementation, and advocacy.

    Qualifications

    • 1–3+ years of experience in tenant, labor, or community organizing, or grassroots advocacy is a plus.
    • Strong commitment to housing justice, racial equity, and anti-displacement.
    • Experience with outreach strategies, especially door-to-door canvassing.
    • Ability to train and motivate others in organizing skills.
    • Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
    • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
    • Must be a proficient or fluent Spanish speaker.

    Working Conditions

    • Must be available for evening and some weekend work based on tenant schedules and community events.
    • Will engage in regular fieldwork, including canvassing and building visits.
    • Position includes administrative responsibilities like data entry, reporting, and campaign tracking.
