    Description

    For over 50 years, Green Guerillas has used a unique mix of education, organizing and advocacy to help people cultivate community gardens, sustain grassroots groups, grow food, engage youth, and address issues critical to the future of food justice and urban agriculture.

    We seek a Community Chef Educator. The ideal candidate is interested in working side-by-side with community gardeners and youth in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx, helping increase the awareness of healthy eating, access to healthy foods, and conducting grassroots community outreach. They are self-motivated and energetic. People with any combination of skills and experience in urban farming, youth organizing, community organizing, and food justice activities are encouraged to apply.

    Role and Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with community gardeners, across NYC, on mini- cooking demonstrations.
    • Meet with community gardeners to assess community gardens needs on a weekly basis before each cooking demonstration.
    • Coordinate and purchase materials needed.
    • Design distribute recipe cards at each event.
    • Must be able to host up to 10 cooking demonstrations at various community gardens.
    • Maintain log book of event dates, activities and recipes as well as brief surveys of participant feedback
    • Maintain relationships throughout the 12 weeks, as necessary, for the community gardens

    Qualifications

    • Interact with others in a positive, respectful manner;
    • Ability to engage and supervise youth;
    • Demonstrate efficiencies in time management and project completion;
    • Minimum of one year of field experience and/or horticultural school;
    • Ability to work well with others - both leading and learning;
    • Ability to connect and communicate with a diverse community;
    • Joy in a fast-paced workplace

    Desired Qualities

    • Familiarity with Urban Agriculture and Food Justice
    • Interest and experience in community work and food advocacy.
    • Comfortable with Google Drive, cloud-based storage, and social media.
    • Knowledge of Spanish or Bangla is helpful but not required.

    Compensation & Hours

    • Pay rate : $30/hr
    • Weekly hours: 10 hrs per week for 3 months
