    The Organization:

    The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, is a New York-based national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans. By combining litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing, AALDEF works with Asian American communities across the country to secure human rights for all.

    Job Description:

    The Communications Associate is responsible for maintaining and promoting AALDEF’s digital presence, engaging with the media, and supporting storytelling efforts that amplify the organization’s impact. The Communications Associate will work closely with the Communications Director and program staff; this position will exercise independent judgement and discretion to develop and execute important communication strategies that reach key audiences, including the press, supporters, and community members.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Draft, edit, and distribute a variety of communications materials, including press releases, newsletters, fact sheets, and community education resources.
    • Draft pitch emails, compile shortlists, and pitch directly to reporters.
    • Curate and create content for AALDEF’s social media channels, tracking engagement and social media trends.
    • Monitor media inbox, social media direct messages, and voicemail, and respond to correspondence in a timely manner.
    • Maintain and update AALDEF’s website and digital platforms, ensuring timely and engaging content.
    • Organize and maintain media databases and cultivate relationships with journalists, editors, and producers.
    • Monitor news cycles and identify opportunities for AALDEF to contribute to key discussions.
    • Support development efforts by assisting with text or graphics for fundraising campaigns, publications, and event promotions.

    Qualifications:

    • A degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field, or a minimum of one year experience in journalism or public relations at a nonprofit organization.
    • A track record, including education and professional or volunteer work, in social justice, advocacy or civil rights issues. A demonstrated familiarity with Asian American civil rights issues is preferred.
    • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with keen attention to detail.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines.
    • Demonstrated ability to operate in high-pressure situations with quick turnaround for written products.
    • Experience with various digital tools, email marketing platforms, and basic graphic design is a plus.
