    Job Summary:

    As a Human Resources Generalist at Portland Tennis & Education (PT&E), you will play a key leadership role in supporting a diverse team of approximately 25 staff members composed of managers, full-time and part-time employees.

    In this role, you will be instrumental in fostering a positive and supportive employee experience, strengthening team culture, and advancing employee accountability—key elements that enable PT&E to deepen its impact in the community we serve.

    Additionally, you will help PT&E expand our team and support the growth and development of current team members in alignment with our core values of belonging, connection, growth, learning, play, and perseverance

    Key Responsibilities:

    Human Resources Administration + Compliance

    • Handle administrative tasks across the full talent lifecycle, including onboarding and benefits enrollment, new hire orientation, personnel file management, and offboarding,
    • Enter and audit employee data in the HR information system to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance.
    • Process bi-weekly payroll and support accurate wage reporting and recordkeeping.
    • Administer all types of employee leave including Paid Leave Oregon, ADA accommodations, parental leave, and other personal or medical leaves.
    • Produce and submit reports on general HR activity.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local labor laws; ensure HR policies and practices reflect legal and ethical standards.

    Employee Experience + Team Growth

    • Coordinate Performance Excellence performance management process, including overseeing an annual calendar of related activities and organizing related documents.
    • Support staff training and other employee development and team culture initiatives, including coordinating employee surveys and giving actionable insights to improve employee experience and address training needs.
    • Assist with employee relations by offering guidance on workplace concerns, conflict resolution, and performance improvement plans.
    • Collaborate with hiring managers on recruitment, including job description updates, posting job openings, screening applicants, conducting reference checks, and preparing offer letters. (Note: on average, PT&E onboards 6-8 new employees per year.)
    • Participate in the development and implementation of human resource policies.

    • Serve as a thought partner to leadership in strengthening organizational culture and aligning HR practices with PT&E’s mission and values.

    Requirements:

    • Ability to work in a hybrid, flexible capacity for a minimum of eight hours a week and a maximum of 20 hours a week during peak seasons.
    • Ability to work onsite at our St. Johns facility in North Portland at least four continual hours per week (one half day) between 9a and 5p with flexibility for additional in-person responsibilities such as onboarding, training, or team events.
    • At least three years of experience managing and designing procedures related to general human resources matters.
    • Knowledge of human resource best practices and ability to provide aligned recommendations to strengthen PT&E’s HR function.
    • Tech proficiency with Google workspace tools.
    • Efficient HR administration skills, including excellent record-keeping skills, attention to detail and time management.
    • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, with experience handling sensitive matters confidentially and professionally.
    • Emotional intelligence: high level of self-awareness and empathy, especially in supporting employee well-being and managing sensitive conversations.
    • Commitment to equity, integrity, and inclusive practices; demonstrated ability to engage with patrons, staff, youth, and families from diverse cultural, academic, and economic backgrounds.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    The following are a plus, but not required. Please note that we encourage applications from individuals whose skills and passion align with this role, even if your experience doesn't perfectly match the description:

    • Human resource certifications
    • Work experience in a nonprofit, academic, athletic, and / or youth development setting
    • Experience navigating employment and labor laws and / or triaging employee grievances toward positive outcomes
    • Experience developing and facilitating trainings for supervisors and staff members on HR activities and procedures
    • Experience developing compensation packages, processes, and practices
    • Experience supporting organizational change efforts, developing onboarding or career progression frameworks, or contributing to strategic HR planning
    • Analytical mindset, including the ability to track, interpret, and report on HR metrics (e.g., retention, engagement, leave utilization) to inform continuous improvement
    • Familiarity with ADP payroll software

    Work Environment:

    This position is based on-site at PT&E’s St. Johns facility in North Portland. Work is typically a combination of sedentary and non-sedentary work. Work can involve being seated at a desk and using a computer and viewing a computer screen. Work can involve being active which can include walking, running, bending, stooping, teaching, playing and coaching recreational activities. Exposure often to noise, cold, and heat.
