    Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director, Voting Rights, the Director of Voting Rights Litigation is responsible—alongside another team member in the same role—for managing CLC’s voting rights litigation, CLC’s largest litigation docket. The Directors jointly supervise the voting litigation work of approximately 20 attorneys who participate in voting rights litigation, including members of the voting rights, litigation, and redistricting teams, as well as legal fellows. The Director leads CLC’s voting rights litigation teams by overseeing case development and management, staffing voting rights cases, developing the litigation skills of other attorneys, and representing CLC both in the courtroom and publicly to the media and in coalition work. The Director also plays an integral role in developing CLC’s voting rights litigation strategy and docket, determining which cases to litigate under which legal claims, and implementing CLC’s strategic vision.

The Director also leads key strategic initiatives within the voting team, studying and developing positions on issues that frequently arise in CLC’s voting rights litigation and facilitating cross-team coordination on these issues that are relevant to CLC’s other practice areas.

This position requires an interest in voting rights, election law, and litigation. It blends legal knowledge and political insight to help develop creative and innovative legal arguments and litigation strategies that strengthen our democracy.

    • Oversee voting rights case management, from pleading stage through discovery, trial, and appellate proceedings
    • Oversee preparation of pleadings, motions, and briefs in federal and state cases, and strategize and manage discovery process
    • Take and defend witness depositions, lead conferences with opposing counsel, and lead in-court proceedings

    Organizational, Management, and Supervision:

    • Develop strategic litigation opportunities in coordination with internal and external stakeholders
    • Aid in finding and securing funding opportunities to support litigation matters
    • Assist Senior Director with litigation cost tracking and management
    • Manage litigation staff, including senior counsel, counsel, fellows, and support staff

    Qualifications

    • At least eight years of post-JD experience
    • Demonstrated formal or informal managerial experience
    • Active membership in the DC bar in good standing, or eligibility to waive into the DC bar
    • Significant litigation experience and expertise, preferably in election law
