    East Side House, founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020, the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.

    The Grants Accountant I is responsible for periodic reporting to government funders. Under the supervision of the Grants Manager or Chief Financial Officer, the Grants Accountant I completes the operational financial transactions for various Federal, State and Local contracts. The Grants Accountant I will complete the process of contacting grantees and their administrators to obtain required reporting for the grants team, and in this position, they must be well versed in ESH policies and procedures. The Grants Accountant I must foster good working relationships, both internally and externally.

    Primary Functions

    Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to:

    • Monthly billing for Contracts
    • Conducts monthly analysis and reconciliations of contracts
    • Process Accounts Payable, Bank deposits and petty cash replenishment duties as needed
    • Complete monthly general ledger account analysis and balance sheet reconciliations
    • Analyzes general ledger activity.
    • Monitors the collection of government contract receivables
    • Work with Grant Account(s) II and Grant Manager:
      • Prepares monthly and quarterly financial reports to governmental agencies for expense reimbursement
      • Preparation for periodic audits performed by governmental agencies and organization’s annual audit.
      • Participates in status meetings with program managers to strategize on contract compliance issues
      • Prepares budget modifications, coordinating with finance and program staff as necessary
      • Works closely with Program Staff analyzing accounting treatment of funds and contract
      • Complete Year-end contract close-outs
      • Liaises with funders as necessary
    • Prepares adjusting, month-end and year-end closing journal entries. Assist program and annual audits
    • Completes projects assigned by the Grants Manager and Chief Financial Officer

    Expected Work Schedule

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs. Workday/hours subject to change.

    ESH has determined that up to zero percent (0%) of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

    Rarely. May need to travel to sites.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
