    Since 2008, Hot Bread Kitchen has empowered New Yorkers who face barriers to economic opportunities through transformative careers in New York City’s food industry. We offer small business development programs, culinary skills training, and job placement, bolstered by individualized wraparound supportive services. Our small business program, HBK Incubates, supports entrepreneurs as they transform their food businesses into sustainable income sources. Culinary Fundamentals, our award-winning culinary training program provides access to high-quality jobs for those starting their careers in the food industry. Our upskilling programs enable incumbent workers to gain further skills leading to higher wages and career advancement. We work diligently alongside our network of over 200 food employer partners and more than 250 nonprofit and government partners to ensure our graduates are set up for success both at home and in their careers.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Hot Bread Kitchen is seeking a dedicated instructor to teach a contextualized Culinary ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) curriculum as part of our 6-week Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers program. This course is designed to equip participants—primarily native Spanish speakers—with the English language skills necessary to thrive in both Hot Bread Kitchen’s culinary training and in future roles in the food industry.

    The ESOL curriculum focuses on building English proficiency through the lens of culinary work, with an emphasis on creating a culturally and socially responsive learning environment. The instructor will play a key role in fostering an ecosystem of support that respects and reflects the backgrounds of our members, while also preparing them for meaningful careers in the culinary field.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Implementing HBK ESOL curriculum and lesson plans, provide contextualized and differentiated ESOL instruction for approximately 25 students.
    • Develop activities to supplement existing curriculum.
    • Provide support to supplement NYC Food Protection course.
    • Document attendance and student’s progress.
    • Attend weekly meetings with program staff to review student progress and participation.
    • Provide one-on-one support to students, as needed.
    • Use allotted administrative hours to prepare for classes.

    Desired Skills & Experience:

    • Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission.
    • TESOL certification.
    • Minimum 3 years teaching English as a Second Language to adult multilingual learners.
    • Spanish-speaking proficiency required and fluency preferred.
    • Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented.
    • Excellent organization skills.
    • Strong communicator with ability to work with a diverse group of bi/multilingual adult learners.
    • Understanding of and experience with trauma informed practices.

    ESTIMATED TOTAL PROJECT TIME AND SCHEDULE:

    • 100 hrs per cohort including:
      • 80 hours of contextualized ESOL instruction for to up to 25 members enrolled in the Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers Program (15 hrs/ week, less some weeks)
      • 25 hours of additional prep time (approx. 4 hrs/week)
      • Classes are held in-person at Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side
      • Class schedule is Monday-Friday 1:45-4:45 pm
      • Program calendar:
    • Monday May 12, 2025 through Wednesday June 18, 2025 (No class on Monday, May 26th)
    • Friday June 16th (5pm-8pm)

    Location and hours

    This position requires regular in-person attendance, 5 days a week, at Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan as well as occasional attendance at our headquarters in Chelsea Market . Class hours are 1:45-4:45 pm, five days per week for a six-week period, with the need for some flexibility in work hours.
