    The Louisiana State Bar Association’s (LSBA) Access to Justice (ATJ) Department seeks an attorney to fill the full-time position of Access to Justice Projects Counsel. The LSBA Access to Justice Department is a nationally recognized program housed at the Louisiana Bar Center in New Orleans and focused on improving access to justice for all Louisianians. The Access to Justice Program plays a unique role in providing information, facilitating connections, and offering resources/tools for the public, the courts, and advocates to support civil legal aid programs with the shared mission of ensuring access to justice for low-income families and underrepresented communities.

    The ATJ Program staff members do not provide direct representation to clients but work collaboratively as a small team with Louisiana Justice Community stakeholders and LSBA Committees. Each team member is responsible for various projects and is encouraged to think creatively about how best to achieve the established goals.

    Position Overview

    The Access to Justice Projects Counsel plays a critical role in shaping and supporting initiatives that expand legal access for underserved communities. This dynamic position is ideal for a mission-driven attorney with a passion for public interest law and access to legal services. The Counsel will lead and collaborate on projects focused on legal system accessibility, affordable legal services, attorney mentorship, pro bono engagement, training for civil legal aid attorneys, and public communications, among other projects on an as needed basis.

    Job Duties & Responsibilities

    The ATJ Projects Counsel will manage, administer, and direct various projects of, or facilitated by, the ATJ Program which strengthen relationships and foster coordination among Louisiana civil justice community members. This includes serving as staff liaison to committees such as the Accessibility Committee, Modest Means Committee, and initiatives such as the LIFT Legal Incubator Program. The Counsel will work with courts, legal service providers, pro bono organizations, law firms, and community stakeholders to build support for Louisiana’s civil legal aid ecosystem.

    • Developing initial plans for projects or programs and coordinating work and committees/project team deliverables
    • Monitoring project deliverables and timelines to ensure timely successful completion of work
    • Facilitating virtual and on-site meetings, drafting summaries, and synthesizing takeaways
    • Conducting research, designing surveys, analyzing data, preparing reports or presentations, and presenting findings to project team members
    • Preparing summaries, creating reports, presentations, training events and other deliverables
    • Communicating and offering feedback on legal resources designed for the public and developing clear, easy to read and use legal information resources
    • Supporting the department through technology, public communications, and stakeholder engagement

    Qualifications

      • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Louisiana or eligibility to waive in
      • 3+ years of legal experience, preferably in public interest law, legal services, or access to justice initiatives
      • Demonstrated commitment to expanding access to the legal system for underserved communities
      • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills
      • Experience working with diverse communities and across sectors

    Compensation and Benefits

    • Compensation will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. A benefits package is also provided for full-time employees.
