    Position Title: Financial Controller (Part-Time)

    Hours: 20 hours/week (flexible scheduling within business hours)

    Reports to: Executive Director

    Location: Hybrid. This position requires a combination of remote and in-person work (approximately 50/50). The office is based in Northern New Jersey.

    Compensation: $40-$65/hours, depending on experience and qualifications.

    Position Summary

    Wafa House is seeking a highly skilled Part-Time Financial Controller to lead and manage the organization’s accounting operations. This position plays a critical role in financial planning, reporting, and oversight, including the administration of government (state and federal) and private foundation grants. The Financial Controller will ensure the integrity of financial systems and maintain compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Oversight and Compliance

    • Manage all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and grants.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and federal and state regulations.
    • Oversee the preparation and distribution of timely, accurate financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annually) to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
    • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and ensuring compliance with audit requirements.
    • Maintain and improve internal control systems to ensure accuracy and security of financial data and assets.

    Grant and Budget Management

    • Prepare, track, and manage budgets and expenditure reports for state and federal grants (e.g., DCF, DOJ), as well as private foundation funding.
    • Ensure financial documentation aligns with grant guidelines and reporting requirements.
    • Monitor grant spending and ensure timely and accurate submission of required financial reports to funders.

    Strategic Financial Planning

    • Develop cash flow forecasts and monitor organizational liquidity to ensure sustainability.
    • Partner with leadership to develop and implement financial strategies that align with programmatic goals.
    • Assess financial risks and opportunities and provide strategic recommendations for improved fiscal stewardship.

    Technology and Systems

    • Oversee implementation and maintenance of accounting software systems; liaise with vendors as needed.
    • Ensure the organization leverages financial technologies for efficiency and compliance.

    Leadership and Collaboration

    • Work closely with the Executive Director, program managers, and Board Finance Committee to align financial practices with organizational goals.
    • Translate complex financial information for non-financial staff and board members.
    • Participate in strategic planning and contribute to the organization's overall financial health and sustainability.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
    • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting or financial management.
    • Demonstrated experience managing and reporting on state and federal grants (Department of Children and Families, Division on Women; Department of Justice, Victims of Crime, etc.).
    • Proficiency in nonprofit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks or similar).
    • Strong analytical and communication skills with the ability to present complex financial data clearly.
    • Proven track record of managing audits, developing internal controls, and preparing financial reports.
    • Experience with cash flow management and financial forecasting.
