    Description

    The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a contract duration until April 30, 2026. Employment location will be home based. The position is paid according to Salary Group 8.

    As Hazard Risk and Forecasting Expert for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action (AHA) you will be responsible for leading on technical support for analyzing hazard risk, the development and application of hazard forecasting models and trigger mechanisms for AHA.

    You will be primarily working within one of Welthungerhilfe’s strategic programs, the Welthungerhilfe Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Facility (WAHAFA), as a member of the WAHAFA Technical Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Team. The WAHAFA project facilitates the participation of German NGOs and their local humanitarian partners through capacity sharing, building Anticipatory Action Plans and linking these plans to pre-agreed financing. Together with the Program Management Unit, WAHAFA forms an Operational Support Unit for AHA within the Humanitarian Directorate of Welthungerhilfe.

    Your responsibilities

    • Support development and institutionalization of locally-led Anticipatory Action Plans, building on existing AHA initiatives as well as wider initiatives around DRR and EW4All.
    • Provide technical support to WAHAFA and WHH AHA project teams on risk analysis, impact mapping, hazard forecasting models and development of trigger mechanisms for climate, conflict and epidemic hazards.
    • Support development and delivery of training on risk analysis and trigger models online and in person to WAHAFA project teams and other AHA stakeholders.
    • Develop tools and resources as required by WAHAFA project teams to support AAP development.
    • Participate and provide thought leadership in relevant technical working group meetings, conferences and climate outlook forums to support Anticipatory Humanitarian Action.
    • Remain aware of technical developments within the AHA field and humanitarian data and analysis more broadly, ensuring trigger models and WHH crisis monitoring are coordinated and relevant.
    • Coordination and cooperation with scientific institutions on applied research, risk analysis and hazard forecasting.
    • Guide Junior Expert(s) with a technical focus, including on risk analysis, trigger models, forecasting and GIS.
    • Support the strategic development of the WAHAFA program.
    • Contribute to the evidence creation around Anticipatory Humanitarian Action.

    Your profile

    • A university degree in a relevant field like mate science / adaptation; meteorology or similar, Natural hazard science or similar; Disaster risk science / management or similar.
    • More than three years of professional experience in humanitarian action,early warning or anticipatory action
    • Strong knowledge in all aspects of humanitarian risk, including hazard forecasting, risk and vulnerability analysis and quantification of risk for climate, conflict and epidemic hazards.
    • Strong knowledge of the humanitarian data and analysis ecosystem, and how data sources can be used to support impact-based forecasting and risk analyses
    • Experience in the development, monitoring and localization of forecasting approaches.
    • Knowledge of remote sensing and GIS to support hazard monitoring and risk analysis.
    • Understanding of the challenges in the application of scientific and humanitarian data in decision making.
    • Knowledge or experience of actuarial science is an asset.
    • Willing and able to travel up to 30%, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa
    • Very good English language skills (essential). French and / or Portuguese language skills are an asset.
