Volunteering in Brazil: Empowering Community Growth through Education

Inspire and empower the next generation of conservation leaders with a variety of educational programs. This unique opportunity is perfect for those interested in community development and education, offering hands-on experience in these fields. As an intern, you'll teach residents of a small coastal town about sustainable practices while also promoting professional development, social justice, and better job prospects in the region.

The organization collaborates closely with the local community to implement initiatives that support environmental conservation and community development. Their aim is to equip this community to protect the area's unique flora and fauna by providing professional development in ecotourism through a range of educational programs. As an intern, you'll help plan, coordinate, and lead these programs, including weekly environmental classes, language exchange programs, computer literacy classes, and a girls' empowerment club for those with advanced Portuguese skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Your tasks will depend on your interests and skills but can include:

  • Planning, preparing, and running environmental education programs and supporting the mangrove restoration work.
  • Assisting with various social justice and skill-building initiatives such as and computer literacy training
  • Assisting with Spanish and English education programs: curriculum development, preparing lesson plans, documenting success and progress made, etc.
  • Assisting with the Girl’s Club (for those with intermediate to advanced Portuguese language skills only)
  • Building relationships with community members in order to better understand their needs and how the organization might help with them
  • Participating in the community-based conservation efforts such as beach clean-ups and reforestation programs
  • Contributing to the upkeep of the complex and overall success of the organization

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience teaching or working within an education setting
  • A passion for social justice and community development
  • Adept communication skills and the ability to build connections with people
  • An interest in environmental conservation
  • Basic level of Portuguese, for those interested in the Girl’s Club a medium to advanced level of Portuguese is required
  • Your own laptop

Directions

Interns stay in one of several apartments within the complex of the organization. Each has a well-equipped kitchen, electricity, Wifi, filtered drinking water, and the complex itself has a shared pool and a garden where interns can enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables. A dedicated office space is available to interns as well. There’s also a cat and other pets living there too. Located in the Passagem neighborhood of Itacaré, the accommodation is a short walk from the historic downtown and the closest beach, Praia Concha.
