Description

Project Summary

Sustainable Vision Tanzania (SVT) is a fully registered NGO that opened its doors and its heart in 2009, as three local university students became frustrated and appalled at the number of orphans (generally accepted term to cover children no longer living with their birth parents) not attending the local public schools where they were volunteering. They had a Vision:

“We dream of a community in which our children can become self-reliant through access to quality education”

Today that vision has become an ongoing work in progress that has already built and runs a single classroom pre-school nursery, has assisted and sponsored in excess of 2000 vulnerable children by securing them places in local schools and providing them with uniforms, books, stationary etc. Has active involvement in six women’s groups and many local community based projects such as HIV/Aids counselling, vocational training, adult education and supporting inmates of the local juvenile prison.

The number of projects SVT is committed to supporting plus their goal of building their own English Medium Primary School has led to the need for SVT to house its volunteers in its own hostel accommodation and thus eliminate the often high Volunteer or Administration/Registration Fee paid by many of the current hundreds of volunteers that arrive in Tanzania each week.

The Role - Summary

The organisation is looking for a long term volunteer who will commit to helping them spearhead their international volunteer recruitment programme from start to finish. From the generation of volunteers, through their selection process, to their smooth arrival in Tanzania and their completion of a 1 to 3 month volunteer experience within an SVT sponsored project, culminating in their exit from the country having had the meaningful and positive experience they deserve. The successful candidate will be housed in the hostel free of charge and will be responsible for the day to day management of the hostel and the volunteers although initially the role can be run from anywhere as the volunteer recruitment drive is rolled out.

The Role and its Impact

The smooth running of SVT’s volunteer programme is a critical element in supporting the vulnerable children and the local communities where SVT has a presence. Without volunteers the project grows slowly, totally reliant on the generosity and faith of the project leaders family and friends. With the help of volunteers the Vision will become a reality and the successful applicant will carry the pride of having directly helped in changing the lives of many local people for the rest of their life. The impact they will have will remain in the hearts and the souls of the communities for many generations to come.

Duties within the Role

  • Work closely with the Tanzanian Project Director, Daimon S Sichone, sharing ideas, experience and knowledge to assist SVT in their growth and quest to achieve their Vision
  • Promote SVT’s volunteer opportunities across the world, researching and recommending educational, group, club and organisation affiliation to generate both individual and group volunteers
  • Be responsible for the creation of and placement of the publicity materials to support the above recommendations including all social media networks as appropriate
  • Handle all incoming volunteer enquiries
  • Organise the timetable and induction of incoming volunteers
  • Be responsible for the day to day management of the volunteers, ensuring they have a meaningful and worthwhile experience within the hostel and project
  • Oversee the daily management functions of the hostel including keeping good budgetary and financial information
  • Creation of a database of volunteer and visitor records for future newsletter / fundraising
  • Assist in the generation and execution of fundraising

Role Requirements

We are seeking a person with commitment to helping to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. A person with drive, energy, a big heart and a flexible and open attitude to life in a third sector country (power cuts and weak internet signals are part for the course). A person prepared to commit to learning about and respecting the local cultures and traditions, including learning basic conversational Kiswahili. The successful applicant must be entirely fluent if not a native English speaker with strong written, communication, interpersonal and IT skills.

Terms

  • Initially this role could be completed remotely, organising volunteer recruitment and handling communications, whilst planning for a long term placement in Moshi
  • Minimum 12 month placement under a formal volunteer agreement with an option to renew for a further twelve months if appropriate
  • Accommodation with private en-suite facilities within the SVT hostel including breakfast, dinner and laundry once resident in Moshi
  • Small monthly pocket money allowance once resident in Mosh

It should be noted that the successful applicant will need to obtain a long term volunteer visa for which the cost is currently set at 1050 US$. However this visa will be obtained for the maximum duration of two years therefore negating the need for any further fee should the volunteer and SVT decide to renew their agreement for a second term. Visa requirements and fees are set by the Tanzanian government and are completely outside of SVT’s control.
