OpenDoors is in search of highly motivated, enthusiastic volunteer tutors for students in grades K-12 in the Asheville area. Tutoring usually happens during the school day or after school at our centrally located office in West Asheville. Occasionally tutoring occurs at an after school, community center, or home location. OpenDoors is open to tutors from all walks of life, ages, and experience levels-- although a commitment to a minimum of one hour a week is typically what works best for the student. Experience teaching, tutoring, working with kids or in education is a plus. Tutors work with students on tackling homework; specific academic subject content; foundational skills in reading, writing, or math; mentoring; or a combination of the above. OpenDoors also contracts with professional tutors who teach Orton-Gillingham methodology in literacy and math skills and with educators who have lengthly experience.
