About First Friends of NJ & NY:

Since its founding in 1997, First Friends of New Jersey and New York has upheld the inherent dignity and humanity of immigrants whose lives have been impacted by the immigration enforcement system. We provide compassion and hope to immigrants through connections with volunteers dedicated to helping them survive detention, gain freedom, and rebuild their lives.

    Position Overview:

The Part-Time Volunteer Manager plays a key role in maintaining and strengthening First Friends’ extensive volunteer network. This position involves regular communication with volunteers, coordination of outreach and engagement opportunities, and administrative support to ensure the smooth functioning of our volunteer programs. The ideal candidate is mission-driven, highly organized, responsive, and comfortable working independently.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    • Serve as the first point of contact for volunteer inquiries; respond to emails and phone calls in a timely and professional manner.
    • Monitor two primary organizational email accounts that are central to volunteer engagement.
    • Provide onboarding support to new volunteers, including responding to interest forms, collecting signed agreements, and maintaining accurate records in the volunteer database.
    • Offer guidance to volunteers using tools such as 8x8 (our hotline system) and our data management platform.
    • Coordinate recruitment and engagement efforts, including tabling at community events and responding to outreach from universities, congregations, and civic groups.
    • Plan and host biweekly virtual volunteer gatherings, and organize in-person volunteer events.
    • Assist in developing and implementing volunteer assessment tools, such as a Spanish language proficiency test.
    • Maintain accurate records related to volunteer activity and donor contributions, including regular data entry.
    • Occasionally supervise volunteers during hotline shifts and provide support during periods of low.

    Qualifications:

    • Strong commitment to the mission of First Friends and to supporting immigrant communities.
    • Excellent communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
    • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
    • Comfortable using or learning platforms such as 8x8, DonorSnap, Google Workspace, and Zoom.
    • Spanish language skills strongly preferred.
    • Experience working with volunteers or in a coordination, customer service, or administrative role is a plus.
    • No college degree required. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply—including those with experience in caregiving, organizing, retail, the service industry, or community-based work—if they are aligned with our values and able to carry out the responsibilities of the role.
    • Availability for occasional in-person events and some evening or weekend hours.
