Community Organizer: Job Description & Responsibilities

    JOB TITLE: Community Organizer

    POSITION: Full-Time, Exempt

    SALARY: $60,000 annually

    LOCATION: Miami-Dade County

    START: Flexible

Beyond the Bars is seeking one full-time Community Organizer to organize low-wage workers with criminal records residing in Miami-Dade County.

    OUR MISSION AND VISION

Beyond the Bars is a worker center in South Florida building the social and economic power of workers with criminal records and their families to transform the industries that rely on their labor and open new doors to industries they’ve long been excluded from. Through organizing, advocacy, education, research, support, and cross-movement solidarity, we fight for a just and thriving future.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Organizers at Beyond the Bars are responsible for carrying out outreach, education, leadership development, and base-building activities with workers with criminal histories in Miami-Dade County and the southern part of Broward County. This position will include conducting worker outreach; building relationships with workers, responsible employers, employer associations, and community stakeholders; setting up one-on-one meetings with workers; facilitating worker leadership development; creating a sector-based committee of worker leaders; organizing meetings, workshops, and trainings to engage, educate, and activate workers; supporting the launch of a worker-driven campaign to raise labor standards and protections in a target industry.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Organizers at Beyond the Bars must be committed to our mission and vision. They are dedicated to building the power, leadership, and self-determination of low-wage workers with records. Their energy and passion holds a room. They are able to build rapport with new people and establish and maintain trust with other low-wage workers, organizational partners, and government officials. They must be willing to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends. And finally, they must be able to manage multiple projects, possess strong organizational skills, and be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.

For this position, Spanish fluency is required, along with access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license.

Applicants with the following qualifications will receive priority:

    • Experience with community organizing, worker center organizing, or labor unions
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Dropbox, and Canva

    COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary of $60,000 annually. The position reports directly to the Co-Executive Director. Given worker schedules and availability, this position will require nontraditional hours, including early morning, evening, and/or weekend hours. Flexible work schedules will be accommodated when possible. As a worker center with a commitment to workplace justice and fair employment practices, following a three-month candidacy period, staff members will be employed on a for-cause, not an at-will, basis.

Email your resume and cover letter to jobs@beyondthebars.com. Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be scheduled on a rolling basis.
