    At the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County (Legal Aid SMC), we use the law to ensure that the social safety net works for everyone. We do this by representing clients as they navigate complex legal systems, empowering people to advocate for themselves, and fixing broken systems through policy change.

    Legal Aid SMC seeks a dynamic and organized person to support the Elder Rights team in working to protect the rights of older adults and adults with disabilities. We represent clients in a diverse range of settings, including the Social Security Administration, probate court, and CARE court, which is a new court focused on addressing the treatment and services needs of people with mental health disorders. We’re looking for a highly motivated, energetic self-starter who cares about customer satisfaction, enjoys collaborating with community partners, and wants to provide direct services for a diverse low-income client population. The right candidate can juggle multiple responsibilities, work efficiently and compassionately, and use systems to organize data. They will be comfortable taking the initiative on projects but will also enjoy supporting the attorneys’ work.

    Responsibilities: The Elder Rights Project Coordinator reports to the Elder Rights Supervising Attorney.

    • Client Services: Screen callers in English and Spanish, maintain call log, schedule appointments for attorneys, provide referrals, support clients completing online intake and ensure accuracy of intake data, follow up with clients, and enter data on case activities.
    • Interpretation: Help attorneys communicate with Spanish-speaking clients by interpreting in client interviews, telephone calls, and court (certification not required).
    • Administrative Support: Assist attorneys with administrative tasks including copying, mailing, obtaining signatures and documents from clients, translation of documents, and in-person court filings.
    • Community Engagement: Coordinate community outreach with agencies serving older adults and adults with disabilities; help attorneys prepare outreach materials in English and Spanish; participate in outreach events and conduct presentations in Spanish.
    • Health Consumer Center Support and Coverage: The Elder Rights Project Coordinator will spend about a quarter of their time supporting the HCC team. This support will include client services, interpretation, and administrative support.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Spanish fluency (oral and written)
    • B.A. degree or equivalent experience that demonstrates ability to learn and navigate office systems
    • Excellent writing and communication skills
    • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to pass background check

    Compensation and Benefits:

    Compensation: From $31.28 per hour depending on experience

    Full-time nonexempt position; 35-hour workweek

    Benefits: Legal Aid SMC pays 100% of premium for employee-only health coverage, and up to 95% for employee + dependent coverage depending on plan selected. Legal Aid SMC pays 100% premium for dental and vision insurance for employees and dependents. Full-time employees receive 16 days of vacation in the first year, plus 13 days of sick leave and 12 paid holidays. Employees become eligible for 3% employer contribution to 401(k) plan after the first year of full-time employment.

    Hybrid Workplace: Legal Aid SMC is a hybrid workplace. Employee work schedules and work locations are determined by a combination of factors including client needs, organizational needs, workload demands, and personal preference. This role is expected to work at least three days per week in our Redwood City office, as well as attend in-person outreach events, court hearings, or staff gatherings in San Mateo County (2-3 per month). All employees are expected to be available to commute to the office as needed. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required to work in the office.
