    Description

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the nation’s oldest conservation and recreation organization. We foster the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the outdoors. With a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and welcoming access, AMC connects people to the natural world through outdoor experiences, and advocacy.

    Position Overview

AMC is seeking a strategic, mission-aligned Director of Omnichannel Merchandising to lead the vision, strategy, and execution of our growing retail program across both physical and digital platforms. This role is ideal for a retail leader who understands how meaningful gear and merchandise can enhance outdoor experiences, build brand affinity, and support a broader conservation mission.

You’ll lead the development of a multi-year merchandising roadmap, drive earned revenue growth through innovative assortments and storytelling, and elevate the AMC retail experience—from our lodges and huts to our e-commerce platform.

This is a hybrid role ideally on site a few times a month at either Pinkham Notch (Gorham, NH) and our Headquarter (Boston, MA).

    What You'll Do AT AMC

    Strategic Leadership & Planning

    • Develop and execute a forward-looking omnichannel merchandising strategy aligned with AMC’s brand, mission, and revenue goals.
    • Lead seasonal line planning, category development, and retail assortments for physical locations (lodges, huts, visitors centers) and online storefront.
    • Partner across departments to ensure retail supports AMC lodging, programs, membership, and conservation values.

    Product Development & Curation

    • Source and develop compelling, sustainable products that reflect AMC’s values and serve a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts.
    • Build and manage vendor relationships, with a focus on domestic, ethical, and environmentally responsible partners.
    • Oversee AMC-branded merchandise strategy, ensuring brand consistency and alignment with mission messaging.

    Omnichannel Experience

    • Drive a cohesive and seamless retail experience across physical and digital platforms.
    • Collaborate with digital marketing, technology, and operations teams to improve e-commerce performance, merchandising functionality, and conversion.
    • Innovate in-lodge and event-based retail touchpoints to surprise, delight, and equip members and guests.

    Financial Performance & Analytics

    • Develop and manage annual merchandise budgets, revenue forecasts, and KPIs.
    • Optimize inventory, margin, and supply chain operations in partnership with finance and lodging operations teams.
    • Leverage reporting tools and performance metrics to inform real-time decision-making.

    Team Leadership & Collaboration

    • Lead a small, nimble team across merchandising, retail operations, and visual merchandising.
    • Foster a collaborative, values-driven culture grounded in curiosity, integrity, and growth.
    • Act as the primary merchandising liaison with AMC hospitality, operations, marketing, and program leads.

    Qualifications

    What AMC Is Looking For

    • 7+ years of merchandising, retail strategy, or omnichannel retail experience; nonprofit, outdoor, or mission-based brand experience is a plus.
    • Demonstrated success driving revenue growth through product development, assortment planning, and omnichannel execution.
    • Strong knowledge of ethical sourcing, sustainable materials, and vendor negotiations.
    • Passion for the outdoors and alignment with AMC’s mission and values.
    • Leadership experience with cross-functional teams, vendors, and strategic partners.
    • Familiarity with Shopify, POS systems, and retail analytics platforms preferred.
