About Us

STOP is a community organization that builds the power of residents in Woodlawn and surrounding neighborhoods on the Southside of Chicago to impact the forces and decisions that affect our lives.

STOP was founded in 2004 when residents—fed up with being excluded from community planning processes—and students researching gentrification joined forces and stopped a University of Chicago plan to demolish a 500-unit subsidized housing complex home to low-income working African American families.

Since our initial victory, STOP has developed into a multi-issue community organization that fights for racial and economic justice on housing, healthcare, jobs and juvenile justice issues.

Our mission is to advance economic and social human rights by organizing and developing leadership among people most affected by economic and racial oppression.
