About Us

MISSION: America SCORES New York empowers students in Harlem, Washington Heights and Brooklyn using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning. With teamwork as the unifying value, America SCORES New York inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities.

PROGRAM: America SCORES New York offers one of the most unusual and successful approaches to youth development and literacy training for at-risk students: poetry writing-soccer teams. By learning creative writing and soccer in tandem, teams of students, ages 8 to 13, encourage and inspire one another to achieve on the field, in the classroom and in the community. America SCORES New York provides a seamless flow of academic, social, physical and emotional development that gives our students the foundation to succeed throughout the school day and beyond. America SCORES New York serves 600+ children annually through our five day a week after-school program.

HIGHLIGHTS: America SCORES' New York team-based programs includes 35 weeks of after-school and summer programs, including 3 soccer and writing curricula, weekly soccer games, ongoing coach/teacher professional development, and year-round community-wide special events.

  • Guided by specially trained writing coaches, our boys and girls teams go into their immediate community to identify problems and help bring about positive change by using their creative writing skills, ideas and talents.
  • At the end of the fall semester, students from each school act out their poetry, short stories and original dramas at the Community Poetry SLAM!
  • The spring semester ends with our annual celebration called Jamboree!, a community soccer tournament and service project recognition event.

ABOUT US: America SCORES New York is an affiliate of America SCORES, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit that also serves public school children in Washington DC, Bay Area, Denver, Chicago, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New England, Seattle, Cleveland, Dallas, Portland and Vancouver.
