Who we are:
Mercy's Village International is an organization dedicated to fighting poverty through the education of children and the empowerment of girls and young women. Our mission is to ensure that underprivileged children have better access to a quality education, regardless of their ethnicity, socioeconomic background or circumstances. Mercy's Village International is a registered 501(c)3, non-profit organization, operating out of El Segundo, California.
What we do:
Our main project is a school in Northern Uganda called Mercy's Village Primary School. The school was founded in 2011, and began with 70 children in P1 and P2 (first and second grade). This year we have 192 students in P1-P6. We hope to continue adding one new grade each year until we have a full Ugandan Primary School (up to P7 - seventh grade). Not only do we provide our students with an affordable quality education; we also provide two meals a day, a school uniform, all their school supplies, basic medical care, and a fun, safe environment for them to grow and learn in.
Why we are needed:
Northern Uganda was plagued by war for over 20 brutal years. The Lord's Resistance Army devastated the area, stole land and property, burned villages, kidnapped boys from families and turned them into soldiers, raped women and killed anyone who apposed them. The village our school is in was one of the worst hit areas of the war. The whole village was forced to evacuate and live in internally displaced camps where they were forced to live in miserable states of poverty, disease, crime and boredom. Now that the war is over, the people are trying to pick up the pieces of their destroyed lives and build a new, better life for themselves. Education is the key to a brighter future. By starting with the youngest in society, we believe we can give the children of our village the strong foundation needed to grow into educated adults who can build a good future for themselves and help lift their family and community out of poverty.
Who we serve:
All of our students are from poor village families who could not afford to send their children to public school. Many were orphaned by the war or HIV/AIDS, or abandoned because their parents could not care for them.
What you can do:
Partner with us to help support our school. We rely fully on donations in order to keep our school running and to help it grow and improve. See the next page for ways you can support our basic operation of the school, or an exciting new project.
