World Salmon Council

The World Salmon Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental education for-purpose organization.

Founded in 2012, our mission is to educate, engage and empower local communities in the importance of native wild fish, watershed conservation, and environmental stewardship. We do so primarily through the award-winning Salmon Watch educational program.

Salmon Watch

The World Salmon Council manages the award-winning Salmon Watch environmental education program. Rooted in the Pacific Northwest region's unique ecosystems, we serve middle and high school classes around metro Portland and the Columbia Gorge. Through 3 program components we are able to provide a complete experience for participants:

I. Salmon Watch Curriculum: A classroom instructional package that includes a multidisciplinary curriculum and a host of educational materials.

II. Salmon Watch Field Trips: Each participating class takes an all-day field trip in September, October or November to one of several beautiful salmon spawning sites in Mt. Hood National Forest, Columbia River Gorge or Mid-Coast Range. Four volunteer educators accompany each field trip to engage students in the following study areas: 

• Salmon Biology
• Macroinvertebrate Identification
• Water Quality Sampling
• Riparian Zone Observation

III. Service Learning Projects: Each class also has the opportunity to participate in a project aimed at addressing critical issues and raising community awareness about healthy watersheds. For example, this past year a Portland class engineered and installed a rain catchment system at a local food cart.
