Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women
Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) is a transformation/charter schoollocated in Baltimore City. Our school will open with grades 6 in September of 2009, and will grow to serve over 560 students in grades 6-12. This school will be open to all young women from across the city regardless of their academic ability and will encourage these young women to develop their academic and leadership potential through a rigorous curriculum and strong school culture. Our goal is nothing less than to transform Baltimore, one young woman at a time! We plan to accomplish this goal by offering the young women of Baltimore city a first-rate, college preparatory, secondary school experience. BLSYW is managed by BCPSS in partnership with the Foundation for BLSYW that has been established to support the development and growth of the school. BLSYW and the partnering foundation are modeled on the highly successful Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem founded in 1996 through a partnership between the NYC Department of Education and Ann and Andrew Tisch. The East Harlem school boasts some of the highest graduation rates in NYC and all of their eight graduating classes have achieved 100 percent college acceptance. This school has been successfully replicated in NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Austin. The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women will join this impressive network of schools.
