Earthjustice, the nonprofit law firm for the environment, is dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment.
Earthjustice opened a regional office in Honolulu in 1988 to protect natural and cultural resources throughout Hawai`i and the Pacific. Earthjustice Hawai`i is the only public interest environmental law firm in the state of Hawai`i and the mid-Pacific region.
Hawai`i is known throughout the world for its magnificent ecosystems, unique plant and animal species, and Native Hawaiian culture. However, Hawai`i's remarkable biodiversity and cultural heritage are disappearing. Native plants and animals found nowhere else in the world are threatened by alien species and habitat destruction. The marine environment is contaminated by sewage and pesticide runoff. Precious streams that support Native Hawaiian cultural practices are diverted for agribusiness, urban development and resorts. Commercial fisheries harm endangered marine species and degrade their ocean habitat.
Earthjustice Hawai`i works with environmental, Native Hawaiian, and community groups in lawsuits that seek to protect fragile island ecosystems and restore water and cultural rights of Native Hawaiian communities using the law, community advocacy, and public education.
