Environment Las Americas

Headquartered in Cochabamba, Bolivia and Portland, Maine, Environment Las Americas is committed to cutting-edge teaching and advocacy that promotes rapid and profound change in human behaviour toward the environment.

We use Integral Sustainability Education (ISE) to empower the next generation of leaders to think and act holistically about the interdependence between their internal and external environments.

Through innovative high school and university ISE curriculum development, we are working to safeguard the environmental health of the Americas.

We are currently: • Developing action-oriented teaching materials for high schools in Cochabamba, Boliva. • Creating experiential education models, including: production of a sustainability advocacy magazine, an integral physical education and leadership development program, environmental health defense clinic. • Teaching personal sustainability within the parameters of community and global sustainability. • Liaising with educational establishments in the United States, such as Prescott College, to facilitate the development of ISE. • Committed to evaluating the effectiveness of sustainability education.

What is Integral Sustainability Education (ISE)? • Sustainability – the ability of humans to organize themselves in a way that allows the natural world to support our healthy development. • Integral Sustainability Education. Teaching / advocacy about the interdependence between the internal and external environment, politics and economics, in order to promote personal, community and global sustainaibility.

The curriculums in development by Environment Las Americas are: • Transformative – life changing for the individual and the wider environment • Transdisciplinary – teaching and learning in a way that promotes a synthesis of academic disciplines. • Advocacy-based - Pleading or arguing in favor of something, such as a cause, idea, or policy; active support. • Experiential & interactive - weaving theory and practice together through hands-on learning and advocacy. • Holistic / integral – Focused on the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts. • Health-focused – well-being is the essential foundation of sustainability.
