Awaken Dance Theater
Beginning In the fall of 2013, former Ailey
student Rebekka Nodhturft set out to create a single piece.
After hearing disparaging remarks about interracial couples in the
heart of NYC, Nodhturft was fed-up and ready to speak out with passion
sparked by her own experience. She created the company’s first piece:
“The Race and Relationships Choreography Project.”
Motivated to continue creating works about political and social issues, Awaken Dance Theater's second major work, “Only in America,” addresses the tragedy of school shootings and the need for increased gun control in the United States. Other works explore power and abuse in relationships, and the overuse of technology and work in society. Currently, ADT is working on an evening-length performance exploring climate change.
