Path Forward is a nonprofit organization on a mission to empower people to restart their careers after time spent focused on caregiving. Our work addresses discrimination that people face when they try to re-enter the paid workforce after a career break for childcare or other caregiving responsibilities. A recent study from UNC documented that parents who identified themselves as being out of work for caregiving were half as likely to get a callback as parents who’d been unemployed for the same length of time for a reason other than caretaking. This discrimination disproportionately affects women. The BLS estimates that 36% of prime working age women are not participating in the paid workforce due to caregiving. For men it’s only 3%.
