About Us

The AjA Project is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization headquartered in San Diego that uses photography-based educational programs to transform the lives of displaced or marginalized youth. Utilizing participatory photography methods, AjA’s programs encourage youth to think critically about their identities, develop leadership skills and increase their social capacity. Since AjA’s founding 10 years ago, Journey, its after-school program, has provided long-term, arts-based programming for over 1000 refugee and immigrant youth. Additionally, AjA has shared the students’ visual narratives with over 1 million viewers through large-scale public exhibits, including National Geographic Society’s Explorers’ Hall (2003), United Nations Headquarters (2004), and the San Diego Museum of Arts (2006).
