Misericordia di Firenze

The Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Firenze, besides being “the Mother” of the great movement of Misericordie d’Italia, is probably the first Voluntary Organization in the world. It was founded in 1244, in the same century as Dante’s birth; its main base rises in front of Giotto’s Bell Tower, near Brunelleschi’s Dome and the magnificent Florence Cathedral. The Association welcomes men and women from all social ranks who wish to help people in need of both material and moral support. But we do not live only on our past and traditions: we have updated our philosophy and strategy to conform with modern needs. At the moment the staff is made up of 112 workers with differing professional profiles. We have also about 1,100 volunteers who donate their time for the activities which are closest to their feelings; some of our activities are: First aid, ambulance care assistance with specialized volunteers and employees; Social transport from/for day centers, rehabilitation centers; Home care: cleaning, help; Assistance for the infirm; Food assistance for needy people; Rounds for the homeless, providing health assistance and food; We have carried out, and continue to do so, Humanitarian Missions in the 'trouble spots' of the world. Hosting of Belarus children; Fund raising events: solidarity markets, lotteries, charity dinners, etc.; All the activities are managed by specialized volunteers and carried out by them and employees. 120 doctors work in the Ambulatori della Misericordia di Firenze, providing high quality services for all social backgrounds. With over 40 medical specialties our three clinics are a reference point for all citizens of our city. The Assistenza Minorati Gravi della Misericordia di Firenze offers experience and skills to volunteers in the field of social inclusion and rehabilitation of intellectually disabled people. In the A.M.G. Center qualified personnel work with volunteers. Inside the A.M.G. there is also a Research Center which uses modern diagnostic techniques for intellectual disability. Apart from an equip of specialists, the CREA Center is managed by one of the most recognized world experts in this field. Our two nursing homes, Il Bobolino for self-sufficient people and Villa Laura for non self-sufficient people, through the collaboration between nurses and volunteers has developed a peaceful, friendly enviroment.
