Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity

The goal of the Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity is increasing the amount and effectiveness of resources aimed at institutional and structural racism in communities though capacity building, education and convening of grantmakers and grantseekers.

We do this primarily through the following strategies: 1) Providing opportunities for grantmakers to learn and strategize about cutting-edge racial equity and racial justice issues and how they apply to their work within various fields; 2) Increasing grantmakers' understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different racial justice efforts, and assisting them in assessing the impact of their own grantmaking; 3) Engaging in internal assessments of foundations' institutional needs around racial justice and equity, and coordinating or adapting tools to most effectively meet their needs; 4) Consulting with cornerstone nonprofits that explicitly address issues of structural racism to strengthen their capacity, increase coordination and effectiveness; and

5) Assisting local funders and communities identify and sustain effective approaches to achieve racial justice.
