Greater Newark Cares Mentoring Movement
The Greater Newark Cares Mentoring Movement (GNCMM) is a local affiliate of the National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) founded by Susan L. Taylor, editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence Magazine. The Greater Newark CARES Mentor-Recruitment Circle (Greater Newark CARES) is a coalition of leaders and everyday people who love and believe in our children and know that the status quo must be changed. We recruit adult mentors and direct them to existing youth-support organizations in desperate need of volunteers. Our mission is to ensure that our struggling youngsters in need of support and guidance have caring adults in their lives who are committed to helping them succeed. The Greater Newark CARES brings leaders from all segments of the community together—religious, civic, business, non profit, fraternal, sororal, academic, collegiate, grassroots, retirees—to petition them to engage their constituents and colleagues in helping to solve the deepening state of emergency among Black youngsters by devoting four hours a month to mentoring them in one-to-one or group-mentoring relationships.
