About Us

To assist youth in overcoming challenges and becoming healthy adults through adventure-based counseling.

We do Adventure Therapy with Youth:

The most commonly agreed upon definition in the field, and one that we believe best fits our program was published in 2012:

“The prescriptive use of adventure experiences provided by mental health professionals often in natural settings that kinesthetically engage clients on cognitive, affective, and behavioral levels.” – Gass, Gillis, & Russell, 2012

As an alternative to traditional counseling Adventure Works is committed to offering adventure therapy services to at-risk youth in DeKalb County as a way to intervene in a timely and preventative manner with the goal of teaching the life skills necessary for becoming self-sufficient and confident, mentally healthy adults.

Adventure therapy is based in outdoor and experiential education. Activities are safely structured to encourage healthy risk taking in new or unfamiliar settings, creating opportunities to develop problem-solving skills, teamwork, and feelings of accomplishment, which can promote positive behavior changes through isomorphic connections.

An isomorphic connection is made when a learning experience is transferred to another life experience. All adventure therapy activities are discussed with the youth and related to common, day-to-day situations.
