Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts

About Us

Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts is a ceramic residency/retreat, located in Newcastle Maine, with the mission of “providing professional artists time and space to create in clay.” We serve approximately 100 artists annually from across the country and abroad. Watershed’s unique niche grows out of its small and intimate communal approach to a non-hierarchical, process-oriented environment for experimentation, exploration and growth.

In addition to our focus as an international residency program, Watershed serves the local community by offering a variety of clay programs. We provide community classes for adults and children statewide through our Mudmobile program, hold ceramic workshops for people with special needs, collaborate with other non-profit organizations to offer learning opportunities through ceramic art, and hold public lectures and events for the regional community. Watershed is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization with strong grass-roots support. The international community of clay artists supports Watershed with donations of their time, work and funds. Nationally, collectors, arts educators, businesses and individuals concerned with the arts contribute to Watershed. Maine artists, community class participants, and local schools, colleges, and universities as well as other social services organizations lend their support to Watershed. Actively engaged in the local, national and international community, Watershed’s Board of Trustees is composed of corporate executives, arts industry leaders, philanthropists and artists.
