Discovery Southeast

For 25 years Discovery Southeast has connected Southeast Alaskans to nature. The regional non-profit was started by outdoor leaders in Southeast Alaska who wanted to ensure that local residents, particularly children, were able to experience the same local grandeur that was available to visiting tourists. Today, with many of those same founders still involved, our core Nature Studies and Outdoor Explorers Programs teach elementary children to experience, be comfortable in, and explore nature. We strive to reach all Juneau youth, with an emphasis to include those who might not otherwise be introduced to the outdoors at a young age. We help them listen to, often for the first time, the call of a Varied Thrush, or see the ocean and land collide in a tide pool. Many additional programs provide educational materials and outdoor opportunities for children and adults, particularly teachers, and we continue to grow new programs while making sure our core remains solid.
