North Luangwa Conservation Programme

North Luangwa National Park (NLNP), together with its five surrounding game management areas (GMA), comprises the North Luangwa Ecosystem (NLE): a 25,000km² tract of pristine wilderness in northern Zambia, which boasts breathtaking landscapes, and serves as a haven for iconic species. The ecosystem is of international conservation importance as home to significant wildlife numbers; in particular, North Luangwa protects Zambia’s largest and most stable elephant population and only black rhino population.

The park was first established in 1972, and Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) has been an implementing partner with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) since 1986 through its North Luangwa Conservation Program (NLCP). The long-term NLCP partnership has led to NLNP becoming the best managed and most secure National Park in Zambia today.
